Forbes worked as an engineer and later became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of St Andrews. He made significant contributions to the study of lunar theory, particularly in the calculation of lunar tables and the prediction of eclipses.

Forbes also designed several innovative telescopes, including the Forbes Quadrant Electrometer and the Forbes Reflecting Circle. His work in optics and astronomy earned him recognition as a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Astronomical Society.

In addition to his scientific work, Forbes was also interested in politics and served as a Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament from 1900 to 1906. He was knighted in 1923 for his contributions to science and engineering.
